Despite putting in 100 percent in whatever we do, certain uncontrollable habits often impede our success. Procrastination or poor time management are chief among these, and I will touch upon the latter here.

So many of us often feel that we have so many things to do and such less time! The basic thing to be understood when one looks to hone time management skills is what is it that makes us manage time poorly in the first place. Quite simply it is a matter of not getting our priorities straight; a clear idea of “what is more important?”. For example, you have to make a choice between hitting the snooze button on the alarm clock five times so that you can sleep a little extra or getting to work five minutes early and managing your time for the rest of the day.

Effective time management can be learnt
Time management is not only about ‘time’ alone. It is an amalgam of ethics, practices, skills, tools and systems that help in making an effective use of time. It is also important to remember that time management is as much a skill as it is a habit, and therefore, it is something that can be mastered with continuous practice. Here are some basic tips to get you start on developing this habit:

Plan and focus: Successful time management starts with careful planning. Therefore, every morning give yourself 15 minutes to focus your mind. During this time list the to-do activities for the day, prioritize them and accordingly aim and schedule your actions for the day.

Create an everyday “to-do” list. Adopting this habit will keep your mind away from all distractions and you will be more engrossed in meeting your tasks within the assigned time.

Avoid distractions: When doing important tasks at work, try to prevent floundering by keeping away from all distractions. Close your door and turn off your phone, pager and e-mail.

Keep healthy: A healthy body and healthy mind are critical for success in almost anything we strive to achieve. Take good care of yourself by adopting a healthy lifestyle which will help in keeping stress away.

Stay motivated: Do not give up. Strive to always believe in the importance of time and you will be amazed to see yourself climbing the ladder of success.

It is good to remember that good time management skills help in reducing stress, while poor time management result in added stress and low self-esteem. By keeping stress levels low, you can keep high energy and concentration levels, which will in turn help you manage time more effectively. Trust me, it is a great circle to get into!
