<p>The Positive Psychology class taught by Ben Shahar attracts 1400 students per semester and 20% of Harvard graduates take this elective course. According to Ben Shahar, the class &#8211; which focuses on happiness, self-esteem and motivation &#8211; gives students the tools to succeed and face life with more joy. This 45-year-old teacher, considered by some to be &#8220;the happiness guru&#8221;, highlights in his class 14 key tips for improving the quality of our personal status and contributing to a positive life: <span id="more-2026"></span></p>
<p>Tip 1. Thank God for everything you have: Write down 10 things you have in your life that give you happiness. Focus on the good things!</p>
<p>Tip 2. Practice physical activity: Experts say exercising helps improve mood. 30 minutes of exercise is the best antidote against sadness and stress.</p>
<p>Tip 3. Breakfast: Some people miss breakfast for lack of time or not to get fat. Studies show that breakfast gives you energy, helps you think and perform your activities successfully.</p>
<p>Tip 4. Assertive: Ask what you want and say what you think. Being assertive helps improve your self-esteem. Being left and remaining silent creates sadness and hopelessness.</p>
<p>Tip 5. Spend your money on experiences: A study found that 75% of people felt happier when they invested their money in travel, courses and classes; While only the rest said they felt happier when buying things.</p>
<p>Tip 6. Face your challenges: Studies show that the more you postpone something, the more anxiety and tension you generate. Write short weekly lists of tasks and complete them.</p>
<p>Tip 7. Put everywhere nice memories, phrases and photos of your loved ones: Fill your fridge, your computer, your desk, your room, YOUR LIFE of beautiful memories.</p>
<p>Tip 8. Always greet and be nice to other people: More than 100 inquiries state that just smiling changes the mood.</p>
<p>Tip 9. Wear comfortable shoes: If your feet hurt you, you become moody, says Dr. Keinth Wapner, President of the American Orthopedics Association.</p>

<p>Tip 11. Listen to music (Praise God): It is proven that listening to music awakens you to sing, this will make your life happy.</p>

<p>Teddy Roosevelt, as he was popularly known, was an inspirational figure. As he alludes to in the quote above, making mistakes is an integral part of doing something and striving for success. Unless one overcomes the fear of failing or making a mistake, it is unlikely that one will take all the steps required to achieve the desired outcome. Even as a person makes a mistake, there will be critics around &#8212; it is important to ignore the critics who are there to point fingers from a distance. He gives this message eloquently as part of his &#8220;Citizenship in a Republic&#8221; speech delivered in 1910, a passage referred to as the Man in the Arena (reproduced below). </p>
<p><strong>The Man in the Arena</strong></p>
<p>It is not the critic who counts;<br />
not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles,<br />
or where the doer of deeds could have done them better.<br />
The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena,<br />

<p>As is often said, the only constant in life is change. When change happens, we are bound to be affected by it. At the same time, sometimes we have to make changes to change the results or outcome of what we are trying to achieve.  We cannot expect to get different results, if we keep doing the same things. If what is being done doesn&#8217;t yield the desired results, change the &#8216;inputs&#8217;. Be willing to change or else, expect the same undesirable results. </p>
<p>The ability to change is different from being fickle. A person who is willing to change is making a conscious and informed decision to change, depending on the facts of a situation and after considering various factors. Being obstinate even when everything points you to make a change is insanity. </p>

She went beyond the call of duty to help in the rescue of 359 people out of 379 and was later shot by the terrorist. She gave the last ounce of her blood in saving the passengers of the flight even when she was wounded. She was posthumously awarded the highest Indian gallantry award, the Ashok Chakra, and several other awards by other countries. Leaders can take a lesson from her story of courage; leaders must go beyond the call of duty they set an example for other people. Sir Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa and many other leaders have proven that when you go beyond your job responsibilities you begin to create a new life for yourself and others.</li>
<li><strong>Arunima Sinha, first female amputee to scale Everest</strong><img class="aligncenter wp-image-11899 " title="Arunima Sinha, first female amputee to scale Everest" src="http://www.success-mantras.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Arunima-Sinha-first-female-amputee-to-scale-Everest.jpg" alt="Arunima Sinha, first female amputee to scale Everest"  width="483" height="322"  /><center><em style="font-size: 10px;">Source: http://achhikhabre.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/arunima-sinha-first-woman-amputee-to-scale-mounth-everest.jpg</em></center>Imagine a woman losing one of her legs in a train accident and then deciding to scale the world’s highest peak. This is the story of Arunima Sinha, who was mauled by thieves in a train while she was travelling to take an examination. Sinha recounts, “I resisted and they pushed me out of the train. I could not move. I remember seeing a train coming towards me. I tried getting up. By then, the train had run over my leg. I don&#8217;t remember anything after that.” While recovering from the injury she resolved to climb Mt. Everest, which ultimately made her the first female amputee to scale Everest. As a leader, one must have bounce-back power as shown by Arunima. It’s all about bouncing back from failures and winning again that makes a successful leader. This reminds me of Amitabh Bachchan who went through a bad patch in business when his company ABC Corp. was not doing well. He didn’t give up. Instead he persevered and came up with India’s leading television show, Kaun Banega Crorepati. Leaders make the best out of tough times and then they make it big.</li>
</ol>

They have big visions: SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk shared his vision to colonize Mars – now that’s a big vision; Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, is testing out ways to make deliveries with drones; and Samsung is working on &#8216;Project Valley,&#8217; a program to develop smartphones with bendable and foldable screens. The question is what’s your big vision?</p>
<p><strong>You have to Persevere.<br />
</strong>A Chinese bamboo tree is unique — you water it and <img class="alignright wp-image-11158" title="lead-characters-of-indian-movie-dangal" src="http://focusadventure.in/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/Lead-characters-of-Indian-movie-Dangal.jpg" alt="lead-characters-of-indian-movie-dangal" width="228" height="157" />nurture it for four years and nothing will happen. There would be no visible sign of growth but all of a sudden in the fifth year the bamboo tree would grow close to ninety feet. When you work on your dream, things will happen. Sometimes you may not see any sign of growth for a long time. In those moments don’t believe your eyes, believe your heart. The bamboo tree is growing beneath. Have faith. People will make fun of you, asking you, “Is that all you have after four years?” Remember at that moment that you have to believe in your heart. Napoleon Hill, author of <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Think and Grow Rich</span>, said, “Whatever the mind can believe and conceive it can achieve.”</p>
<p><strong>Study and Upgrade.<br />
</strong>Mahavir Singh studies the past videos of Geeta Kumari to understand the reasons behind her failure in the international performances. Effective and useful analysis of the available data is the key to predicting and prescribing future actions. The analysis not only helps minimize the mistakes, but it helps in driving the most appropriate actions in future.</p>

<p><strong>Learn to Fly Alone:<br />
</strong>Geeta’s father was her strength. He would guide her during the match on what strategy to use and how to wrestle and win. <img class="alignleft wp-image-11161" title="wrestler-champion-geeta-phogat" src="http://focusadventure.in/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/Wrestler-champion-Geeta-Phogat.jpg" alt="wrestler-champion-geeta-phogat" width="329" height="185" />But in the final wrestling match when Geeta was expecting her father to be present, he didn’t turn up. Geeta’s worst nightmare came to life and she had to fight without her father physically being present. Geeta was just like an eaglet that was pushed from the nest to fly by herself. Geeta did well; she applied all her learning during the match. She finally won the gold at Commonwealth Games. Chak De is another movie in which Kabir Khan (Shahrukh Khan), the coach of the Indian women’s hockey team told the team before the final match, to play with their heart, without expecting any support from him. The team finally won. As a leader, you must be willing to let go of the trained mentee and let him or her become independent. Till that time enjoy the Dangal song – Dangal, Dangal!</p>

Individual contributors who do well in their roles, get promoted to people managers as a natural career progression in most companies. His concern was well founded – how do we promote people without measuring their ability to manage people?</p>

<p>Someone might be a great individual contributor in say a sales role, but leading a team of sales people is a completely different ball game. Yet, this seems to be the career path open to most people who are doing well in individual contributor roles.  How do we address this gap? The first step for organizations is to have multiple career paths available for individuals – for example, I know quite a few successful individual contributors who are very happy doing what they are doing and do not want to take up a people management role. We are slowly seeing more and more companies trying to create such lateral movement options available for such people by opening up more global roles and larger portfolios to manage instead of people.</p>
<p>Having said that, majority of people still aspire to manage teams and be people managers in the long run. We have had some experience in designing and delivering <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.focusadventure.in/new-manager-training.aspx" target="_blank">new manager training interventions</a> for clients, who have sought our assistance in equipping <a rel="nofollow" href="http://focusadventure.in/2016/02/02/4-challenges-for-a-new-manager/" target="_blank">new managers</a> with the right skill sets in their journey ahead. If you do get an opportunity to lead a team of people, <strong>below are a set of 5 tips which could come in handy for you.</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">1. <strong>Share your values</strong> -<br />
<a title="Values Exploration" rel="nofollow" href="http://www.focusadventure.in/values-exploration.aspx" target="_blank">Values based leadership</a> is slowly gaining popularity in the business world and for good reason. It is important for the team to know what are the unshakeable values that their manager stands for. Comparisons with your predecessor are also to be expected – one of the common laments we hear from new managers is “It is so tough because my predecessor was an amazing manager. They compare everything I do with what he/she did!” Yet, the other way to look at is, if your predecessor was a great manager, chances are you would have inherited a good team and that is the best start you could expect.  In the initial period, when the team is getting to know and evaluate you as a manager, there is no harm in re-emphasizing these values frequently and demonstrating them in day to day situations. For example, if you say timeliness is one of the Must-haves for your team, and then turn up late for <a rel="nofollow" href="http://focusadventure.in/2013/08/27/5-steps-to-more-effective-team-meetings/" target="_blank">every team meeting</a> – your credibility is likely to take a nose dive.  Consistency in behaviors is key in this aspect. While situations might change, the values you stand for should not.</p>

<p>Secondly, it is important to articulatebehaviors associated with these values – otherwise they remain very abstract (as unfortunately happens to many companies’ core values!) and the team might not be able to grasp the essence of the behaviors that contribute to those values.</p>
<p>2. <strong>Say Thank you as often as you can </strong>-<br />
Seems simple, isn’t it? Yet, most new managers get so caught up in day to day transactions that they forget to take a moment out to say Thank you to the team for a job well done. It could be through an email note sent after an especially difficult month, where team has pulled out all stops to deliver a tough sales target or a challenging production cycle in record time. Picking up the phone and saying thank you with specific mention of instances where the team has gone the extra mile is even better. Celebrating team successes is the next step in this. Too often, we find that new managers start initiatives like a regular team dinner(with the noblest of intentions!), but they soon fall victim to time pressures and slowly die out as a practice.</p>

<p>I remember working with a motivated and driven sales team, who after giving their best every month used to go out for a “Let down your hair” dinner session with their manager. On more probing, many of them confessed, that the team dinner was one thing which they looked forward to pull them through some of the more difficult months.</p>
<p>3. <strong>Do what you say you would do (DWYSYWD)</strong> –<br />
Most new managers lose credibility with their teams in this aspect. People like working with managers who are predictable in their behavior, rather than ones which spring surprises. We have interacted with managers who complain – “What is the big deal if I forget to return a phone call?” The answer is simple – it shows you don’t care. Imagine this scenario – One of your team members calls while you are in the middle of an urgent meeting and you (the manager) do not answer his call. You send an auto response from your phone –“I am busy. Will call back”.  Later the call back unfortunately gets missed out due to your busy schedule. What if the team member had been extremely disappointed with the yearly appraisal and wanted to schedule a discussion for that. The message he gets is – this is not important for my manager. No wonder then, that the new manager’s credibility takes a nose dive after a few such incidents! DWYSYWD should be your mantra in all your team interactions, be it as simple as returning a team member’s phone call or more complicated aspects like annual appraisal discussions and setting team policies.</p>
<p>4. <strong>Be honest and open</strong> –<br />
Sounds simplistic? It is easier said than done. The team-manager trust is like a bank balance, when you as a new manager do something to reinforce the team’s trust, it is a deposit in the trust account. However, when you do something which breaches the team’s trust, it is a withdrawal on the trust balance. The best way to avoid trust balance withdrawals is to be as open and honest as possible.</p>

<p>One of the common breaches of trust we hear from teams is about managers asking teams to work in one particular fashion at the start of a quarter or year and course correcting mid-way without any explanation. The team naturally feels let down as they have to adjust to the new processes/directions without even knowing the reasons behind the decision. Being open also includes the aspect of listening to the team’s inputs and ideas on issues and critical aspects of their work. Sometimes, the feeling of not being heard can bring about huge dissatisfaction within the team.</p>
<p>5. <strong>Know when to step back</strong> –<br />
New managers are usually guilty of adding their inputs to every idea they hear from their team. Sometimes in their zeal to add value to a discussion, they cannot help adding their two cents to every idea they hear.</p>

<p>One of the common complaints we have heard from teams is – “We never feel it is our idea after a team meeting. Regardless of how good the idea was, our manager would always add – This is a good idea, but why don’t we add this bit as well?” Knowing when to step back and listen is a crucial skill for a new manager to master – the common refrain we hear from managers is “But if we don’t step in, things don’t get done right!” However, the bigger problem is that if you keep stepping in all the time, the team never would have the chance to make mistakes and learn from them.</p>

<p>The story of Srikanth Bolla is an inspirational story going viral across social networks, inspiring readers to go beyond possibilities and attempt the impossible. <span id="more-1884"></span>He will be <em>the leader</em> of 2016 for me because he is doing so much for the specially-abled community. He has not only enabled them to take up corporate jobs, but also inspired countless such people to make a living successfully.</p>
<p><strong>Problem Versus Opportunity:<br />
<img class="wp-image-9783 alignright" title="within-every-problem-is-an-opportunity-dont-give-up" src="http://www.success-mantras.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Within-Every-Problem-Is-an-Opportunity.Dont-Give-Up.jpg" alt="within-every-problem-is-an-opportunity-dont-give-up" width="136" height="136" /></strong>Born in a small town in Andhra Pradesh, India, Srikanth had to face his destiny when doctors pronounced that he would be born blind. Being blind is a disadvantage in a country that is yet to develop facilities for specially-abled. But his parents showed the tenacity to go through the tough times with confidence. There is a saying – “you can see a problem as an opportunity or vice versa.” His parents saw this unfolding as an opportunity and got their blind son admitted to a school with a hope of a miracle. Not a surprise to his parents, Srikanth performed with flying colors even after his disadvantage. For leaders there is a lot to learn; one can take a business challenge as an opportunity or see it as a problem. Organizations like Flipkart, Shop Clues, Snap Deal, Amazon, and more, saw an opportunity to engage people through the Internet to shop online, while there were other companies that saw the Internet as a problem. How you see the world around you makes a difference in the quality of results you get. Now back to the story.</p>
<p><strong>Keep on Going on and on and on:<br />
</strong>After the 10<sup>th</sup> standard (intermediate education level), he wanted to take up science as a subject but somehow, the government refused. The reason cited by the education board was that he was unfit to have science as his core subject. Srikanth Bolla had something inside him that wanted him to challenge the system, and he did. After six months fighting the system, he won and he chose science as his core subject. When you persist, you begin to turn the tables. Leaders are those who persist where an average person would give up. Just one more try can make a difference. Whether you are starting a business or on the verge of bankruptcy, don’t give up, just take one more shot. You never know when the gates of abundance will open for you. This is what happened with Srikanth.</p>
<p><strong>Power of Flexibility</strong>:<br />
He topped with 98% in Class 12 and henceforth applied to India’s top educational institution – IIT. He was refused the admit card to the IIT entrance because of his disability. When you have mindset of growth you become flexible and find solutions. That’s what Srikanth believed in – having a flexible approach to achieve his outcomes. He applied to schools in the United States for an undergraduate program and secured admission in four of the top schools – MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, and Carnegie Mellon. Finally, he chose MIT and completed his education. Leaders must know that there is no one way to success; you might have to test new roads to know what’s possible and how to get the end outcome. Srikanth tried and succeeded in getting the education he wanted.</p>
<p><strong><strong><img class="alignright wp-image-9782 " title="start-with-why" src="http://www.success-mantras.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Start-with-Why.png" alt="start-with-why" width="90" height="139" /></strong>Have Meaning:<br />
</strong>The story doesn’t end here; Srikanth went ahead and started his own organization called Bollant Industries Pvt. Ltd. in Hyderabad. His sole purpose was to help the specially-abled make a living. To live his purpose, he hires a workforce that is specially-abled and trains them for regular jobs in his company. Angel investors are investing in his company for the sheer hard work and passion he brings into growing this company. Having a mission bigger than just earning profit creates a meaning for everyone who is a part of the organization. In the book <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.amazon.in/Start-Why-Leaders-Inspire-Everyone/dp/1591846447" target="_blank">The Big Why</a> by Simon Sinek, the author shares how companies can create a bigger purpose and generate tremendous energy in the organization with the power of the “Big Why.”</p>
<p>Today Srikanth Bolla is a CEO of this 50 crore-rupee company and his life has become a message. Such leaders are transforming the lives of people with the sheer power of their grit. I would like to invite you to share a story of a leader that has inspired you the most. For me, Srikanth tops the leadership chart.</p>
