Karen Salmansohn is a self-help book author, renowned for several best-selling books including How to Be Happy, Dammit and The Bounce Back Book. This article is an adaptation of the author’s article published on “The Huffington Post” and deals with ways to bounce back from hard times in life.

Most of us at some point in our life feel challenged, depressed, stressed, and completely broken, as if we are the only ones singled out by our fate for sufferings. This article is a guiding light for all of us to stop thinking about the bad in our life and refocus on the good.

Tips:

1. Understand the rule – positivity attracts positivity and vice versa

If you surround yourself with depressing questions, you will only get depressing answers. Why me? Why did I get this disease? What if my fear comes true? These questions are a waste of time and can burden you with unhappy feelings. Therefore, stop this self-interrogation right away. Instead, ask yourself what can I learn from this? How can I make my today happier?  What should I do to relax?

2. Give yourself time to heal

If you can confront, tolerate, and deal with your pain, it will eventually disappear. However, you should not push yourself too much and too fast. If you are finding it hard to express your pain verbally, then maintain a journal. Write down your deepest feelings, soon you will realize that you are setting yourself free of the worries.

3. Indulge in your passions

Indulge in the things that you love to do, the activities that can raise your self-esteem. If writing your own blog makes you feel proud, go-ahead pour out your feelings. Derive strengths from things that are your passion.

4. Explore outside yourself

If you are too much engulfed by your own little world of problems, you may find it hard to bounce back from difficult times. Therefore, Karen Salmansohn’s advice is to look outside for inspiration. Volunteer some event; it will give you a clear vision to look at your problems.

5. Visualize a happy future

Sit in a comfortable place of your choice and think about a good future or happy memories. Then, list down the five happiest moments of your life and five events which you would like to happen in the future. Visualize with as much detail as possible. If you try to tap the positive thoughts, you are actively changing your body chemistry.

6. Let go!

Sounds easy, but it may not be as simple to let go of a circumstance that changed your life. However, think of such times as something that is a part of your life but not the whole life. List down things you have in your life and be grateful for them instead of things that you are missing. If you learn to appreciate the other things of life, which you already have, you would bounce back fast. Therefore, whenever you think you are stuck somewhere, let go of the possessions that are not working for you. You would definitely feel lighter once you get rid of the emotional burden. Make way for new experiences and people in your life.
