Tuesday, October 9, 2012 1:39Our society that is largely driven by science and reason often underplays the mind/body connection. Although, some researchers have repeatedly confirmed the power of positive attitude to lead a healthy and happy life, some researchers present a completely different outlook. Some believe that stress is pivotal to drive success while others think it deteriorates the power to succeed. Therefore, the question is whether our thoughts and feelings have an impact on our success or not?
Whether stress helps you to succeed or not depends upon your perspective. It is believed that worry is part of the human defensive response and stress can actually help us succeed in life. Most of us are convinced about the negative effects of stress on our health. We blame stress for most of the health issues. It is not completely wrong to say that stress leads to most number of heart attacks in the world. In fact, a study has shown that most people experience an attack on a Monday morning approx. 9 am. This could sound absurd but it is true that our unrealistic expectations are taking a toll on our life.
If you are expecting everything to be positive, you are not wrong. However, you should be prepared to face challenges and difficulties. They are an inevitable part of life. Therefore, taking too much of stress in times of difficulty is not always the right thing to do. No person has attained success without overcoming the roadblocks that were part of the journey. In fact, success gurus swear that challenges have most of the times opened new opportunities for them. Therefore, when faced with a challenge, do not feel stressed out; view it differently, as a stepping-stone to growth.
Obviously, stress will play havoc on your health if you react with aggression, anger, and depression. However, it can be good for you, if you look it differently. Stress is not always harmful; some stress is healthy and necessary to drive us in our journey of success. Stress energizes your brain and prepares it to handle bigger problems in the future. A little bit of stress can make you resilient.
Nevertheless, you would never hear that stress is good, or stress thrives success, but your perception of it can definitely influence the effects of stress – positive or negative. Change is an inevitable part of life, if you worry about it, you are inviting negative effects of stress, and if you view it in a positive light, who knows you may come up with some innovation.
Whether you succeed or not is totally based on your response to the circumstances and events occurring in your life.
According to Dr Adam Perkins, Research Worker at King’s College London, people who worry a lot have a high IQ and they tend to be creators, visionaries, and inventors. On the other hand, people who do not worry much but are intelligent tend to attain success as frontline implementers in stressful situations. For instance, fighter pilots.
He concludes by saying that some worry is necessary but too much can prove to be hazardous. Excessive of stress can be potentially unhealthy and of no value or purpose.
