Robin Sharma is a highly successful author known globally for churning out bestselling books on personal development and leadership. He became a global phenomenon when his book ‘The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari’ topped the international bestseller chart recording a sale of millions of copies. He has written a total of 11 books and undertaken hundreds of seminars on leadership across the globe. His latest work is “The Leader Who Had No Title: A Modern Fable on Real Success in Business and in Life”.

Holding double degrees in law, Robin Sharma became a successful litigation lawyer. He had achieved all that he aimed for – money, status and success. Soon after he discovered that in his tryst of achieving a picture-perfect life he had lost authenticity. This was the time when he pulled back from the life he was living to reinvent his existence.

Now, Robin Sharma is not just a lawyer, he is an author of bestseller books, a sought-after keynote speaker and seminar leader for several Fortune 500 corporations and the founder of Sharma Leadership International Inc., which boasts an impressive client base of big companies including GE, Nike, Starbucks, IBM, The Coca-Cola Company, Microsoft etc.

“Within you lies the sun, the moon, the sky and all the wonders of this universe. The intelligence that created these wonders is the same force that created you. All things around you come from the same source. We are all one.

Every being on this Earth, every object on this Earth has a soul. All souls flow into one, this is the Soul of the Universe.

You see when you nourish your own mind and your own spirit, you are really feeding the Soul of the Universe. When you improve yourself, you are improving the lives of all those around you. And when you have the courage to advance confidently in the direction of your dreams, you begin to draw upon the power of the universe. (…) life gives you what you ask of it.

Success coach and motivation expert Brian Tracy writes in his newsletter that the key to long-term success is not factors such as education, family background, intelligence, etc. that we typically consider. Instead, he cites a study by sociologist Dr.Edward Banfield of Harvard University that showed that the main reason for “success in life was a particular attitude of mind”.

Brian talks about three important mindsets to work towards success:
a) Develop a long term perspective: To be successful, take into account the future as well as the present when making decisions. In fact, Banfield’s study showed that the longer period of time that a person considered during planning and acting, greater the person’s level of success.

b) Measure the future potential impact:
When setting priorities, which in itself an important element of working towards success, consider the potential future impact on your life. Whether this is the choice between spending quality time with your family over watching television or upgrading/ acquiring new skills by taking an additional course, the potential future impact of these choices is crucial.

c) Practice delayed gratification:
For long-term success, learn to delay gratification; build the discipline to sacrifice a bit of the present. As Brian writes in his newsletter: “The natural tendency of individuals to spend everything they earn plus a little bit more, and the mind-set of doing what is fun, easy and enjoyable-is the primary cause of economic and personal failure in life. On the other hand, disciplining yourself to do what you know is right and important, although difficult, is the highroad to pride, self-esteem and personal satisfaction.”

Adapted from an e-newsletter from Brian Tracy. Visit his website for plenty more personal development tips and insightful, practical tips to achieve personal and professional success.

Negative thinking appears to be more prevalent than positive thinking. It seems that with most people positive thinking requires some effort, whereas negative thinking comes easily and uninvited. This has much to do with education and the environment one has been living in.

If you have been brought up in a happy and positive atmosphere, where people value success and self-improvement, then it will be easier for you to think positively and expect success. If you have been brought up under poor or difficult situations, you will probably go on expecting difficulties and failure.

We all view everything through our predominant mental attitude. If our thoughts are positive, that is fine, but if they are negative, our lives and circumstances will probably mirror these thoughts.

If you believe that you are going to fail, you will unconsciously sabotage every opportunity to succeed. If you are afraid of meeting new people or having close relationships, you will do everything to avoid people and relationships, and then complain that you are lonely and nobody loves you.

Do you often think about difficulties, failure and disasters? Do you keep thinking about the negative news you have seen on the TV or read in the newspapers?

Do you see yourself stuck and unable to improve your life or your health? Do you frequently think that you do not deserve happiness or money, or that it is too difficult to get them? If you do, then you will close your mind, see no opportunities, and behave and react in such ways, as to repel people and opportunities.

The mind does not usually judge or examine thoughts and opinions before accepting them. If what it hears, sees and reads is always negative, it accepts this as the standard way of thinking and behavior.

The media constantly bombards the mind with a lot of information about disasters, catastrophes, wars and other unhappy events. This information sinks into the subconscious mind, and then manifests as your habitual manner of thinking. By occupying the mind with depressing and pessimistic thoughts you radiate negative energy into the surrounding world, thus creating and recreating more negativity, failures and disasters.

The mind is neutral energy. The way you think determines whether the results are positive and beneficial or negative and harmful. It is the same of energy acting in different ways.

The good news are that persistent inner work can change habits of thinking. You must be willing to put energy and time to pursue positive thinking, in order to change your mental attitude.

A few Tips:

- Each time you catch yourself thinking a negative thought, reject the thought, and think a positive one instead.

- If you catch yourself visualizing failure, visualize success instead.

- If you hear yourself uttering negative words, change to positive words instead.

- When you say, “I cannot”, say, “I can”.

- Do you repeat negative words and phrases in your mind? Change them to positive ones.

- Open your mind to positive attitude and expect positive results.

- Decide that from today, from this very moment, you are leaving negative thinking behind, and starting on the way toward positive thinking and behavior.

It is never too late to change your attitude and your life.

‘Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle, When the sun comes up, you’d better be running.’ —A quote hung up in basketball great Michael Jordan’s room

Action means converting your thoughts into a physical reality through consistent effort. It is putting things in motion and getting them done. ‘To act’ is to work on your thoughts to achieve your goals.

Every action that you take is the result of a desire that resides deep within your heart. If your intentions are good and you are clear about what you want to achieve, you are already halfway to success. It is the Power of Action that will take you through the next half. What is required is firm faith in yourself and a clearly defined purpose. The Power of Action is born in your heart as you aim for your goal with a strong will.

We all know that a seed cannot become a tree in one day. Every seed has an inherent capacity to grow but it needs a caring gardener who will plant it in the correct environment and take care of it with patience until it grows into a tree. Similarly, your soul has the potential to embrace the universe around you and give shape to your dreams, ambitions and desires. All you need is to act like the caring gardener of your mind, body and soul.

Action is a natural process
Growth is a natural process. A seed becomes a sapling with natural ease. Does it make any special effort to grow? Certainly not.

Once you start following the simple steps mentioned in this chapter, you will be able to tap the natural secret of setting things in motion with the least effort. Most people do not take action because they think it is painful to act. But they forget an important fact: that everything in the universe is in constant motion in some form or the other. Each and every cell of your body and each atom of the universe is in motion. So taking action is something that you do in harmony with the universe.

Co-ordination with the least effort
The human body is a classic example of co-ordination with the least effort. Innumerable living cells perform individual actions but they work together to ensure that the body works smoothly. Your heart, for example, beats over one lakh times a day; yet you are probably not aware how effectively it functions. The same goes for the brain, the liver and many other organs. In a larger sense, our body is the perfect example of great teamwork. Similarly, when you use the Power of Action and have a clear goal all your body parts get into a rhythm to achieve the target.

Two Action Steps:

Step 1: Act with positive feelings. Take action in the direction of your goals with courage, confidence and conviction. When you do so, results will start showing up sooner or later. Also, others will start seeing you as a charismatic person.

Step 2: Learn and improve continuously through the Power of Action. You stand here today because this is where your thoughts and education have brought you. To go further you need to bring about a paradigm shift in your thoughts and actions through an investment in self-improvement.

Success Mantra: Do something to improve yourself daily: take a walk and talk to yourself positively, record your voice with positive auto-suggestions, read motivational quotes, or just plan your day and work according to the plan.

We all love the first day of our new job. Then time flies, and the same workplace gets irritating and superlatively boring. To top it off, you have an irritating boss and an increment is the last thing you care about. So, what is it that is going wrong? It’s because we don’t want to be happy at work. Instead of seeing the glass as half full, you’re seeing it as half empty. If you’re happy, rest everything will fall into place and nothing will seem boring.

Here I have sorted a few ways to be happy at work.

1. SMILE!
Smile to everyone around you. Even if you hate the people around you, all you got to do is smile and be happy for yourself. Don’t mind who thinks what about you. The more you smile, the less complex everything else will seem to you.

2. Develop
This is a fast paced selfish world. The sooner you realize the better. So, don’t wait for someone to come, hold your hand and help you develop personally and professionally. You’re in charge of your own self and it is your responsibility to look out for all possible opportunities to develop in every possible way.

3. Always ask for feedback
For anyone to prosper it is always important to gain feedback from the experienced and the less experienced. One can never achieve growth if they are just doing something aimlessly, as one just ends up making innumerable mistakes.

4. Meet deadlines
It is important to meet deadlines at work as that creates a good impression about you. However, make sure that you never over-promise and under-deliver.

5. Stay positive
Avoid as much negativity possible. Think about it, when you speak negative about anyone, do you feel any better? It’s just spoils your mood even more. So try and avoid such negative interactions. Let people be the way they are. You have the power to change, but only yourself. So just be indifferent to negativity and be happy.

May be a new job could be the answer to your problems, but the right attitude, a positive mindset, a desire and commitment to continuously develop, improve and accomplish are pre-requisites for a permanent ticket to happiness and fulfillment at work.

Nobody in this world is a born leader. For those who claim to be, they might have the traits, but not the skills. Leadership skills need to be developed and the earlier you work at it, the better. However, for the late comers, it’s never too late.

In this article, I will make you understand on why and how to develop strong leadership skills.

Why?
Successful management is not just about assigning tasks to the team but, to achieve them as well. It’s more about inspiring your team members and help them achieve their potential. And you can only inspire them if they respect you. And to be respected, you must develop good leadership skills.

How?

1.	Ask for feedback: don’t just blindly think that you’re a good leader. At all intervals, ask for feedback. Doing so will help you in a big way. Based on feedback from others, you can understand your skills better and you will know what changes to be made.

2.	Pay attention: there is a vast difference between hearing and listening. Always listen carefully to what your team members are saying. Whether it’s their problems or suggestions think of them as your own and listen. And then accordingly give your empathies or suggestions to them.

3.	Communicate: a good leader must know to communicate well. Make sure that you are heard well. It is important that you’re tone of speaking is positive and motivating.

4.	Respect your team members: a fundamental part of developing leadership skills is to learn to respect your team’s potential. Give them a chance to take decisions on certain issues. And when you trust them, do it completely.

5.	Mean what you say: here’s a simple example; if you stress a lot on punctuality to your team members, then make sure that you’re punctual yourself first, when it comes to deadines or any other important thing. Don’t just preach, rather practice it as well.

6.	Allocate leadership: leadership should not be all about you. Make sure that you distribute tasks evenly among your team members. Give them also a chance to explore and learn by themselves. There is no way better than involving more people in the leadership process.

7.	Evaluate your success with that of the team: when in a team, success is not all about you. You should be responsible enough to ensure that along with you, your team is also developing. Help them in building their skills as this will enhance motivation and team performance.

Success comes through growth. And, when that growth is personal, it is termed self development. There are many personal factors that shape our life, ambitions and personality. All we need to do is to make sure that those factors influence us in an optimistic way.

Given below is a list of self development tips that will help you achieve success:

1.	Assess yourself
First, start by examining yourself. Everyone is in need of self development. So, don’t ever think you don’t . Rather, think about the areas you need to work on. Once you do that, decide on how to go about it.

2.	List your goals
When you decide to work on self development, it’s very important to have a clear set of goals. So, make a list of goals you want to achieve and remember to monitor those on a regular basis so that you keep yourself focused.

3.	Accept change
If you keep whining about, why good things aren’t happening to you, then you need to press the stop button at the earliest. It’s only because sometimes we just aren’t ready to accept changes. Whether good or bad, the world around us is constantly evolving with changes. So, why should you be waiting?

4.	Forget the past
All of us have a past that just makes us feel uncomfortable. But constantly looking into the past and getting depressed about it will simply stub our growth. Instead look ahead at what you can do now.

5.	Take hobby classes.
Life is a continuous learning process. Don’t think of age as a barrier. Instead take hobby classes to develop a new talent.

6.	Identify your weaknesses
Nobody is perfect. Everyone is born with weaknesses. And we can only live a successful life, if we identify and work towards overcoming them.

7.	Challenge yourself

Think of impossible goals as a challenge. Because when you work hard towards achieving them, you will understand the meaning of achievement better. Don’t settle for something easier, as you will never learn anything new.

8.	Don’t stop.
There is no such end to self development. With learning, comes development. And both are a lifelong process. So, don’t you ever stop and enjoy developing yourself.

As someone rightly said, success does come from within. Very few people understand that even small changes in our lifestyle can help bring success into our lives. It all starts with personal management. What is personal management all about? Well, simply put, it is about managing oneself. As individuals if we start working on ourselves first, only then can we expect change in others.

Below are some personal management tips that I chanced upon and would like to share them with you:

1. Be punctual.
Make sure you are in time for all your appointments. Even if it’s meeting a friend for coffee, there is no room for excuses. If you don’t respect someone else’s time, you will never earn their respect.

2. Learn to Control Stress.
Some of us work better under pressure. However, what we don’t realize is the negative effects a stressful situation can have on us. Therefore, always take a break of 5-10 minutes in between of a stressful activity.Or you could try doing meditation and yoga to beat a stressful day.

3. Never ever look down upon anyone.
If you doing well, good for you. Never ever use that as a weapon to make someone else look miserable. Even, if they did the same to you earlier.

4. Do not underestimate anyone.
Chances are you could be better than anyone but not everyone. Actually, it’s the truth.

5. Be more involved.
Success is not only limited to your job or business. Rather, go out and involve yourself in civic and charitable activities. The feeling of personal satisfaction will be highly motivating and rewarding.

6. Do your groundwork ALWAYS!
Always be well prepared for everything. Read up on stuff, think the problem all the way through, talk to the others involved. Doing so will make you see things from an easier perspective.

7. Think hard. Work smart.
Indeed, there is no compromise on hard work. But at the end of the day, it’s all about accomplishing results.

8. Think of others mistakes as your best teachers.
You certainly can’t be making all the mistakes by yourself. More than making yours, learn from others mistakes.

9. Prioritize and Focus.
Don’t think of doing many tasks at once. If you think you’re a pro at multitasking, still don’t. First set your priorities from a list of things and then work on them. It is a lot better to do a few key things well than to do lots of things, but none of them well.

10. Push your limits.
Always believe sky is the limit! If it’s an unusual situation to you, don’t give up. Push yourself and try delivering your best. Others underestimating you is acceptable. But you doing it to yourself is worst.

11. Dream!
Never, ever stop dreaming. What seems impossible, make it possible. Believe in yourself first and then believe in your dreams.

At the end of the day, more than saying, implementation matters. It is more about action and less about talk. To be honest, I am having a hard time altering and reinforcing certain habits myself. But I do realize that if we even start implementing one of the eleven things mentioned above, our outlook towards life will definitely change. That said, I would also like you to understand that personal management only comes to those who have a positive approach towards life. So, above all, stay positive!
